I suggest testing version 2.0beta of a pda-mambot and pda-subdomain-mambot (for previous version see “PDA-version of Joomla’s site” and “The PDA-version of a site as a subdomain“).
Capabilities:
1. To appoint for the pda-version different “main” page (homepage).
2. Set up display of a template:
- There are 6 positions in template
- It is possible to change names of positions from mambot settings
- To output pathway or not (or to don’t output only on “main” page)
- To call mosMainbody on the “main” page or not (i.e. to output the “main” page completely or to keep modules only)
3. A capability to transform page to the utf-8 encoding (for it the library iconv is necessary).
4. Completely set up head-part of the page:
- Joomla’s standard or simplified head block
- A capability to embed styles in the page instead of using separate file
- Set up of xml-head and doctype-head
5. A choice of content-type heading: text/html or text/xhtml.
How to install:
1. Install a pda-template-2.0
2. Install and publish (activate) pda-bot-2.0 or pda-subdomain-bot-2.0 (or both) depending on your needs.
3. Tune up mambot settings (optional).
For pda-subdomain-bot-2.0 don’t forget to apply Cache hack.

Good work physicist!
I also like your articles on reducing the number of Joomla queries etc. Interesting reading
An idea: Is there a way of detecting the user agent and automatically redirecting to the pda or www versions?

Hi Denis,
I don’t understand my needs
**
“2. Install and publish (activate) pda-bot-2.0 or pda-subdomain-bot-2.0 (or both) **depending on your needs**.”
I have J! running in a subdirectory of webRoot:
http://www.example.co.uk/subdirname/
and have set up a subdirectory pda
Should I redirect this to:
http://pda.example.co.uk/subdirname/
Which bot should I publish and use?
How do I tell the bot the subdirname? or is it picked up from config.php
Links don’t work if I redirect the subdomain.
Could you explain how I should have this set up please?
Thanks Teb!

Teb: To make working pda-subdomain it is enough to install pda-template-2.0 and pda-subdomain-bot-2.0. The bot doesn’t affect subdirname (it change domain only).

This is really really great work! Excellent!
I took a look at the code and was wondering if one can make the template work without the images, just plain text with links? Anyone?

Yes, it is possible to cut off all the “img” tags from page output, but it will increase CPU load (significantly or not—I don’t know).
Maybe, I include this opportunity in release version of pda-bot-2.0.

Hans: Try to uninstall old template and install this one (test version, for your own risk!!!).

Physicist: the imgcut pda-template works like a charm! Thank you very much.
As I mentioned in the email, I have AkoComment on my site, which shows in the PDA-template. On the bottom of every article on the frontpage and in the article itself, it says “Post a Comment” or “Send.” Do you know how to disable these things?
Thanks for a great template!
Best,
Hans

Hi.
I’m doing a web site with Joomla 1.0.12, for Sar Virtual, a fictional group of my friends, passioned of flight simulation. My site is ready but i would like to able to see it also with PAD, with necessary limitation imposed by PAD. I installed your last version, and I see on my PAD only the first page. I don’t understand, reading your general guide, very well how can i insert other items or page in the view PAD. Can you explain me with more details how i can modify your plugin?
Very thanks
Emily.

You have two templates: the basic template of a site and a template for PDA (pda-template-2.0). Each template has positions for modules. And you can make so, that in the basic template you will have one names of positions (e.g. ‘top’, ‘left’, ‘right’, ‘bottom’ - they depend on the chosen template), and in a template for a PDA others (e.g. ‘left’, ‘user1′, ‘user2′ - these names can be changed in settings of pda-mambot-2.0). In the above example if the menu is placed in a position ‘left’ it will be shown in both templates. And if the login module is placed in a position ‘right’ it will be shown in the basic template only.
So, you need to assign correctly modules to positions in templates. In some cases it’s easier to make a copy of the module and to place it in other position.
It’s really easy!

HI,
I installed on my joomla site, as I read, the template and mod PDA. I activated the module and i can see on my PDA connected by wi-fi the home page. I try to understand how can i customize the view of the site in PDA, but i don’t understand how. In the mambot module setting i don’t find anything for the customization and in the PDA template i don’t understand what can i do. Can you help me??? Thanks

My site has a lot of large images and multimedia such as Flash and video displayed, they just don’t fit into the small screen of PDA. Is there a way to handle these better? Also My site is in UTF8 chinese, and couldn’t see the text displayed correctly via PDA emulator. Is this the problem of this bot or PDA emulator?

If You have a time in September, please publish PDA mambot guide. Thanks

thewebnsoft:
1. You don’t need to assign any page to PDA template.
2. Seems, it is because of you go to that page directly and not through PDA mambot.

“going through PDA Mambot”,
i am new to joomla, can you explain me.. this step by step..
September 16th, 2007 at 5:52 pm
thewebnsoft:
PDA Mambot starts to work when you visit site from pda device. “Start to work” means that it changes template to pda-template and prepares some data for pda-template. Pda-template will work normally ONLY if this “some data” are prepared.
If you assign some page to pda-template, then this template are loaded directly (without necessary data preparation) and you see an error “Inconsistency between versions of pda-mambot and pda-template”.

What the link do you set for new homepage?
E.g., I set it as “index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5&Itemid=6″ and see “Joomla! License Guidelines” as a homepage on emulator.

Hi guys,
Reading this thread with great interest.
I am looking for the best solution to our mobile content site. We have an excellent packaging technology that generates high end mobile content packages. Books / guides / comics etc. can all be packaged easily into jar files. We are completing an online version to allow end users to create their own content also. I have looked at Joomla before and wanted to explore using a plug-in to make it mobile ready - including device detection. I know all the components are available - but I prefer not to go through the pain of learning to put it all together myself.
Can anyone offer options? Has someone done this before and willing to assist?
